Little Bluestem is a native warm-season grass that typically reaches heights of around 2 feet early in the season and shoots up to 4 feet when setting seed in fall. It has a lovely silvery blue color in spring and summer but really shines in fall when it sets seed and turns blue, purple, copper, and burgundy.

It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil but can adapt to various conditions, including dry and poor soils. Little Bluestem's deep roots make it an excellent choice for erosion control and drought tolerance.

Birds eat the seed and Little Bluestem is the larval host of the common Wood Nymph and at least 6 skippers. It provides cover for mammals and insects in winter, and its seeds feed birds.

Leave standing over winter for color, textural interest and wildlife benefits. Cut back in late winter or early spring to allow for healthy growth.
